Matthijs de Ligt admits Ruben Amorim’s arrival not be good news for everyone at Man Utd

Amorim began his new role on Monday after leaving Sporting Lisbon

Matthijs de Ligt has admitted that Ruben Amorim’s arrival as Manchester United’s new manager could bring uncertainty for some players at Old Trafford.

Amorim began his tenure on Monday after leaving Sporting Lisbon, where he won two league titles in just over four years.

The highly regarded coach replaces Erik ten Hag, who was sacked last month following a disappointing start to the season, with United securing only four wins from their opening 13 games.

Former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has not been included in Amorim’s coaching staff, stepped in as caretaker manager, overseeing an unbeaten run that helped restore a sense of optimism among fans.

De Ligt, who joined Manchester United from Bayern Munich this summer for £42million, started in three of Van Nistelrooy’s games.

However, the Dutch defender knows that with a new manager at the helm, no position is guaranteed.

“I don’t know much about him yet, but I do know that he did a good job at Sporting,” Matthijs de Ligt told Viaplay following Sunday’s comfortable 3-0 win at home to Leicester City. ”

With a new coach, it’s always a bit of a wait and see.

“You have to do your very best and remain yourself.”

The wait for De Ligt will be just under a fortnight, as Manchester United’s next match isn’t until November 24, when they visit newly-promoted Ipswich Town.

During the international break, the Dutch defender will be eager to impress head coach Amorim with his performances for the Netherlands, who have two Nations League fixtures: hosting Hungary and then traveling to face Bosnia and Herzegovina

De Ligt is likely to benefit from Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation, which he successfully implemented at Sporting Lisbon, using three centre-backs.

After managing Sporting for the final time on Sunday, leading them to a 4-2 victory over Braga to maintain their perfect start to the season, Amorim hinted that he plans to adopt the same system at United.

“I know how I am going to play in the beginning, because you have to start with a structure that you know,” the 39-year-old revealed.

“Then you will adapt with the players that you have, some injuries, or no injuries, what kind of players have the abilities to defend, attack, I will discover that in the next few weeks.

“We don’t have a lot of time to train, so I have to show something that I know very well.

“You can take whatever you want from that.”
