On-loan Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili set for spell on sidelines

The 24-year-old was injured during Valencia's 1-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano last weekend

Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to miss time on the pitch after suffering a thigh injury while playing for Valencia.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper, who is set to join Liverpool at the end of the season following a £29m agreement last summer, was injured during Valencia’s 1-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano last weekend.

Despite completing the full 90 minutes, Mamardashvili received treatment on the pitch and has since undergone medical tests.

Valencia have confirmed the injury but has not provided a specific timeline for his recovery.

An official club statement on Tuesday read: “Giorgi Mamardashvili has been diagnosed with an injury to the rectus femoris of his right leg, sustained in the match against Rayo Vallecano at Mestalla.

“The club’s medical services have decided that the goalkeeper will continue with medical treatment and physiotherapy at the Ciudad Deportiva.”

Giorgi Mamardashvili, a key player for both Valencia and the Georgia national team, has been an ever-present for the Spanish club in La Liga this season.

He earned a move to Liverpool after an impressive showing at Euro 2024 and has continued to shine for Valencia, despite their struggles in the league.

Valencia currently sit 19th in La Liga, with only two wins from 14 matches, though they do have games in hand on the teams above them.

Mamardashvili has kept three clean sheets this season, and his absence is expected to be a significant blow to Valencia as they attempt to climb out of the relegation zone.
