Pep Guardiola has signed a new one-year contract extension at Manchester City, putting an end to speculation about his future at the club.
The Spanish manager’s current deal was set to expire at the end of this season, prompting rumours that he could depart after the campaign.
Guardiola had even been linked with the England job before Thomas Tuchel was appointed as Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor.
However, Guardiola has now agreed to stay at City at least until the end of next season, with an official announcement expected in the coming days.
Guardiola, a Barcelona legend, took over at Manchester City in 2016 following a successful three-year spell at Bayern Munich.
Since then, he has overseen the most successful period in the club’s history, with significant backing from Abu Dhabi owner Sheikh Mansour.
Under his leadership, City has won six Premier League titles, including the last four consecutively, along with two FA Cups, four League Cups, and the Champions League in the 2022-23 season.
Next season will mark his 10th year at the helm of City.
Despite his remarkable achievements, City is currently enduring their worst losing streak under Guardiola.
The team has lost four consecutive matches across all competitions and is five points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool, having collected 23 points from their first 11 games.
Following a recent defeat to Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League, Guardiola commented: “More than ever, I want to lift the team and return them to their top level.”
He also dismissed rumors linking him to the Brazil job. City’s struggles have been compounded by the absence of Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder Rodri, who suffered a season-ending injury in their draw against Arsenal earlier in the season.
Rodri has been integral to City’s success since his arrival and played a pivotal role in Spain’s victory over England in the Euro 2024 final.
Guardiola’s side will return to Premier League action after the international break with a tough match against Tottenham on Saturday.
