Liverpool have received a timely injury boost ahead of this weekend’s trip to Southampton. Alisson Becker, the club’s star goalkeeper, returned to training on Tuesday afternoon after a month-long absence.
Alisson has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury during Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on October 5. During his absence, Caoimhin Kelleher has filled in admirably.
The Brazilian worked on his recovery during the international break and was spotted back at the AXA Training Centre just days before Liverpool’s clash at St. Mary’s. Footage shared by the club shows Alisson training with the under-21 squad, alongside Mohamed Salah, who missed Egypt’s recent internationals.
While it’s unclear how much Alisson participated in the session, his return to training is a positive sign for Jurgen Klopp’s team, especially with a busy schedule ahead. Although Kelleher has been solid in Alisson’s absence, head coach Arne Slot has confirmed that Alisson will reclaim his position as Liverpool’s number one keeper once he is fully fit.
After Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa, Slot stated, “Alisson is our first-choice goalkeeper when fit. Caoimhin has been excellent, but once Alisson is fully recovered, he will be our first goalkeeper.”
