Pep Guardiola confirms why Phil Foden is likely to withdraw from England squad

Pep Guardiola has raised concerns that Phil Foden may need to withdraw from the England squad due to a virus.

Foden started every match on England’s journey to the final of Euro 2024 this summer.

However, the 24-year-old has been sidelined for Manchester City’s recent fixtures, including their 4-1 win over Ipswich Town and Saturday’s 3-1 victory at West Ham.

He experienced discomfort during the opening weekend’s match against Chelsea, which has contributed to his absence.

The forward was a key player in Manchester City’s team that secured their sixth Premier League title in seven years last season, narrowly edging out Arsenal on the final day.

Despite this, Foden was included in Lee Carsley’s first England squad since his appointment as interim manager.

But, Guardiola has cast doubt on the 24-year-old’s participation in the upcoming Nations League games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

When asked about Foden’s likely involvement with the Three Lions, Guardiola responded: “I don’t think so right now.

“I think he will not go, but I don’t know.

“He doesn’t feel well — otherwise he would be here. But like I said before, national teams decide.”

Guardiola added: “He doesn’t feel good. It’s his stomach, a little, little virus.

“Some people said antibiotics and so on will be fine.”

Since making his international debut against Iceland in September 2020, Foden has scored four goals in 41 appearances for England.
