Ruben Amorim plans to implement favoured 3-4-3 formation at Manchester United
Amorim is due to fly into Manchester from Lisbon on Monday
Ruben Amorim is set to revolutionise Manchester United by introducing his highly successful Sporting Lisbon approach.
The 39-year-old is scheduled to arrive in Manchester from Lisbon on Monday, though his plans to take to the training pitch have been delayed due to work permit issues.
Amorim signed off from Sporting with a memorable 4-2 comeback victory against Braga on Sunday evening.
Now, his full focus is on implementing his tactical philosophy at United.
During his tenure at Sporting, Amorim achieved remarkable success, winning 71% of his matches, securing two league titles, and lifting two cups.
His preferred formation is a 3-4-3, paired with a high-energy pressing game, and there are no signs that he plans to abandon these principles at Old Trafford.
“I know how I am going to play in the beginning because you have to start with a structure that you know,” he explained in the press conference after his final Sporting match.
“We don’t have a lot of time to train, so I have to show something that I know very well.”
Under Erik ten Hag, United deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation for the past two and a half years, with interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy maintaining this system.
However, this approach is set to be abandoned by new manager Ruben Amorim, whose first match in charge will take place at Portman Road against Ipswich on November 24.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville predicts there will be some growing pains under new manager Amorim.
“I can see why he wanted the job next summer because he would rather have pre-season to implement the brand-new system,” he said on the Stick to Football podcast.
“Those players have not played three at the back at all, some of them might never have played it.”
