Sporting Kansas City have emerged as the leading MLS contender to sign Mohamed Salah, according to The Athletic, although a move remains unlikely.
The Egyptian forward is attracting strong interest from the Saudi Pro League and is believed to prefer staying in Europe if he leaves Liverpool.
However, he remains open to the possibility of moving to MLS. Salah’s future has come under renewed focus after Egypt’s World Cup exit.
Sporting KC are considered to be in pole position among MLS clubs, with the club’s majority owner, Peter Mallouk, the son of Egyptian immigrants.
The club are also pursuing Toulouse winger Yann Gboho and Olympiacos forward Andre Luiz as part of an ambitious recruitment drive. Both deals are valued at around $18-20million, with negotiations for Luiz said to be more advanced.
Gboho, 25, scored 10 goals and provided three assists in 35 appearances last season, while Luiz, 24, joined Olympiacos in January but could be sold for a significant profit after impressing during his spell at Rio Ave.
Mohamed Salah endured a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, scoring seven Premier League goals and providing seven assists after producing a title-winning 2024-25 season in which he registered 29 goals and 18 assists.
Liverpool confirmed in March that the forward would leave the club after nine successful years.
Sporting KC are rebuilding following the departure of long-serving head coach Peter Vermes.
Under new chief soccer officer David Lee and head coach Rapha Wicky, the club are aiming to strengthen its squad after a difficult first half of the MLS season.
With only two Designated Players currently on the roster, Sporting have room to add another marquee signing this summer.
