Steven Gerrard believes that Mohamed Salah’s professionalism has been crucial to his impressive longevity at the top level of football.
The former Liverpool captain is optimistic that the Egyptian star will extend his stay at Anfield beyond the end of his current contract next summer.
Salah has been a standout performer this season under manager Arne Slot, currently leading the team as their top scorer with seven goals across all competitions.
He played a pivotal role in Sunday’s 2-1 home victory against Chelsea, scoring a penalty and providing an assist for Curtis Jones.
Despite his strong form, there is uncertainty surrounding Salah’s future, as he will be eligible to discuss pre-contract agreements with clubs outside of England starting January 1, potentially leading to a free transfer at the end of the season.
During a 12-hour live stream on Redmen TV to raise funds for Zoe’s Place, Gerrard emphasised Salah’s dedication to his craft. He believes the club’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League still has much to contribute before he ultimately departs as a Liverpool legend.
Steven Gerrard said: “I am not surprised [by Salah’s longevity] because I think he is obsessed with the game and I think you can see the body shape, the routines you can see, I obviously follow his social media and I always talk to people [about him].
“I always pick John’s (Achterberg, former Liverpool goalkeeping coach who now works at Al Ettifaq) brain on a daily basis and he says he was really obsessed to be the best.
“He wants to break records and he wants to be remembered as the best, so I am not surprised in terms of how he approaches his profession.
“I think he is going to be one of these players that we will all appreciate even more when the day eventually comes that he moves on.
“I still think we’ll get a couple of years out of Mo Salah, he will deliver for many more years because of his shape, his professionalism, so I hope he stays. I hope we get more out of him and I am not surprised because the ones who are obsessed with the profession.”
