Xabi Alonso has reached an agreement to become Chelsea’s new manager, according to The Athletic.
The 44-year-old visited London last week and has accepted the role, with a four-year contract finalised and an official announcement expected soon.
Alonso was the club’s top target and was keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, with Andoni Iraola also considered during the process.
Alonso has been out of work since his dismissal by Real Madrid in January, just seven months into his tenure. He had previously enjoyed major success with Bayer Leverkusen, leading them to their first Bundesliga title during an unbeaten domestic campaign.
Chelsea parted ways with Liam Rosenior in April after a poor run of results, with Calum McFarlane taking interim charge and guiding the team to the FA Cup final.
Alonso’s arrival signals a fresh direction, with his tactical flexibility and pedigree as a former player expected to bring authority and clarity.
His return to the Premier League also carries added significance following his successful spell at Liverpool during his playing career.
