Liverpool have received a significant boost as manager Arne Slot has confirmed that goalkeeper Alisson Becker has returned to training and is in contention for selection ahead of their Premier League match against Wolves.
The Brazilian international had been sidelined for the last two games due to a hamstring injury.
In his pre-match press conference, Slot revealed that the 31-year-old is now fit and ready to challenge Caoimhin Kelleher for the starting spot at Molineux after successfully completing training on Thursday.
Kelleher, who stepped in during Alisson’s absence, has been in fine form, keeping goal in back-to-back wins against Bournemouth and West Ham.
Alisson’s return provides a timely boost for Liverpool as they prepare for another crucial Premier League fixture.
“We think he is [ready to play],” the head coach said.
“He trained yesterday a part of our session with the group, so we’re expecting him to do the whole session today.
“So, we think he is available but of course we have to train today.
“And of course we’re really happy with Alisson being back but I want to emphasise the fact that Caoimhin [Kelleher] did really well in the two games he was in goal for us, so another example of me having two, and I think even three, good options in certain positions.”
When asked about the futures of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold – each of whom will be out of contract and eligible for a free transfer next summer – Slot remained cautious, offering no clear indication on whether they would agree to new terms.
He said: “I’m very happy these three players are in my team at the moment,. there are a lot of games coming up and I’m very happy I can select them.
“Let’s see what the future holds.”
