Arne Slot retains Liverpool backing despite Carabao Cup exit

The loss marked the Reds’ sixth defeat in seven games and their second against the Eagles in that run

Liverpool manager Arne Slot’s position remains secure despite his side’s dismal 3-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup.

The loss marked the Reds’ sixth defeat in seven games and their second against the Eagles in that run.

After guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut season, Slot’s second campaign has taken a sharp downturn.

The Reds began the season in fine form, winning their opening seven matches in all competitions, but their recent slump has left them seventh in the league and eliminated from the Carabao Cup.

The poor run has inevitably sparked speculation about Slot’s future, but Liverpool’s hierarchy remain firmly behind him.

His achievements last season, most notably leading the club to domestic glory after replacing Jurgen Klopp, have earned him significant credit, and there is no intention of a managerial change during this difficult spell.

Some fans have even wondered whether Liverpool could turn back to Klopp, the club’s most iconic manager of the past two decades, should results continue to decline.

The German, who stepped down in 2024 citing burnout, recently suggested he would only return to management in England for Liverpool.

Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast earlier this month, Klopp said: “I said I will never coach a different team in England, so that means if [I did return], then it’s Liverpool.

“So, yeah, theoretically it is possible.”

Slot, meanwhile, has acknowledged the pressure following Wednesday’s defeat but insisted the result hasn’t changed his perspective.

Liverpool fielded a heavily rotated side, with several academy players on the bench, and the Dutchman defended his selection when questioned about whether he had taken the competition seriously.

“It is always a blow to lose a game of football, especially if it leads to going out of a competition,” said Slot.

“But it is the same selection I used last season in rounds like this.

“There are many reasons we’ve lost five out of six, or six out of seven. None of them are good enough to accept losing so many.”

Liverpool return to Premier League action on Saturday night against Aston Villa at Anfield, where Slot will hope to end their recent slide and restore confidence among supporters.
