Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has expressed his hope that teammate Mohamed Salah will secure a new contract with the club.
Salah’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, and negotiations for an extension have yet to reach a conclusion.
The 32-year-old Egyptian international has been vocal about the lack of progress in contract talks and, starting January 1, will be eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Salah has maintained exceptional form this season.
He scored twice in Liverpool’s recent 6-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, bringing his Premier League goal tally to 15 for the season.
This performance has elevated him to fourth place on Liverpool’s all-time top scorers list.
Cody Gakpo, who joined Liverpool in January 2023, has acknowledged Salah’s significant impact on the team and expressed his desire for the forward to remain at Anfield.
He said: “It is special what we are all witnessing.
“The amount of goals he scores but the assists he gives as well, the way he plays the game, how he puts other attacking players or midfielders like myself in a position to score and to be dangerous is from a high level.
“I hope for us and for him that he can continue doing that for a long time.
“We are very lucky to have him and proud that we can be his team-mate and try to make him better.
“And he is trying to make us better as well.”
