Cody Gakpo reflects on strong start to Liverpool career as Reds eye festive run

The Netherlands international joined the club from PSV Eindhoven in December 2022, with the official transfer completed in January 2023

Cody Gakpo has thoroughly enjoyed his first two years at Liverpool and is determined to help the team maintain their relentless form during the busy festive period.

The Netherlands international joined the club from PSV Eindhoven in December 2022, with the official transfer completed in January 2023.

Since then, Cody Gakpo has made 104 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 32 goals, including nine in the current 2024-25 season.

His contributions have been crucial in helping Arne Slot’s side top both the Premier League and the Champions League.

“I enjoy every minute I’m here,” he told Liverpoolfc.com at the AXA Training Centre. “It has been a fantastic two years for myself.

“A lot of things happened obviously – a lot of good moments, some lesser-good moments but a lot of things that I’ve learned. I’m very happy to be here at the club, hopefully for many more years!

“I think now we are in a good place as a team and I’m very happy that I can contribute as well.

“We spoke about it the other day, some players thought I was here already way longer. But it has only been two years so hopefully a lot more years to come.”

Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to four points on Sunday, delivering an emphatic 6-3 victory at Tottenham Hotspur.

Luis Díaz netted twice, with Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Mohamed Salah also getting on the scoresheet.

Next, Liverpool will host Leicester City at Anfield on Boxing Day, a match that will see Gakpo face his former PSV head coach, Ruud van Nistelrooy, who now manages the Foxes.
