Cody Gakpo will undergo a scan on Monday to determine the extent of the ankle injury he suffered during the Netherlands’ 2-1 win over Serbia in the Nations League, according to The Athletic.
The Liverpool forward was substituted in the 17th minute in Belgrade after being hurt by a challenge from Sasa Lukic.
Cody Gakpo initially tried to continue but was unable to play through the discomfort and signalled to the bench that he needed to be replaced.
Asked if the injury was serious, Netherlands boss Xavi told reporters post-match: “I don’t think so. It’s his ankle, that’s all I know. Tomorrow we will know, but hopefully it’s not too important.”
Gakpo’s fitness will be another concern for Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola after Alexander Isak withdrew from the Sweden squad on Sunday with a thigh problem.
Isak scored in Sweden’s 2-1 win over Romania on Friday and is now returning to Merseyside for treatment.
“He’s got a small problem with his thigh. It’s not a big one but because of the amount of games we’ve got in a small space of time, he won’t be able to make those,” Swedish coach Graham Potter told reporters. “Frustrating for him and obviously for us.”
Cody Gakpo has enjoyed an excellent start to the season, scoring two goals and providing four assists in six appearances for Liverpool.
The 27-year-old also scored the Netherlands’ equaliser in Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Germany. The Netherlands beat Serbia 2-1, with AZ Alkmaar forward Mexx Meerdink scoring both goals
