Crystal Palace open to Marc Guehi sale in January

The 25-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season and has rejected a new deal, was close to joining Liverpool last summer before Palace pulled the plug

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has not ruled out Marc Guehi leaving the club in the January transfer window.

The 25-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season and has rejected a new deal, was close to joining Liverpool last summer before Palace pulled the plug.

It was expected Guehi would see out the campaign and leave on a free transfer, with several European giants interested.

However, Manchester City are now considering a January move due to injuries to key centre-backs.

Glasner has confirmed Palace would accept an offer this month if their asking price is met, leaving the final decision to Marc Guehi, who remains focused on securing his England place ahead of the World Cup.

“I’m not naive,” said Glasner. “If a massive offer comes from City and Marc wants to do it, it will happen.

“There will be a threshold where the club has to say it will happen, as long as Marc says I want to leave, because the final decision is always with the player.

“If you’re just valuing sports, everyone in the club will say Marc has to stay. The chairman will tell you the same. But it’s not one-dimensional. If you see the financial situation, it’s very important.

“Let’s say we have our financial household at home. When you have a nice car, you love the car because it’s been yours for 15 years and whatever, you met your wife there or whatever.

“But… You need some money because it’s cold and the glass window [in your house] is broken, you don’t have money and somebody offers you crazy money for your car.

“You say, no, I don’t want to sell my car. I love my car. It’s the memories of my wife.

“But… I don’t want to freeze. Come on, how much do you pay?

“If you say, OK, because I can get the window and even a new roof, you can have the car, even though I would like to keep it.

“It’s the same with Marc. Everybody wants him to play for Crystal Palace, sign a new contract and stay here forever. That’s what everybody will tell you.

“There’s the situation that his contract ends in the summer and if somebody comes and you are freezing, there will be a moment when the club says: now the financial issue is more important than the sports issue.

“We have to do it and try to get the best one [replacement] we can get to be as successful as possible. That’s where we are.”

He added: “The chairman rejected many offers in the summer because we want to play a successful season and wanted to win the Community Shield. Therefore, Marc is important, and then he rejected the offer.

“The threshold at that time, the money we got offered was not above it. Maybe it was close, but it was not above.

“If somebody had arrived and said, we pay you 80 million for Marc and Marc said: ‘I want to go’. Marc wouldn’t be a Crystal Palace player.

“Every position higher in the Premier League gets you more TV money. Sometimes I tell him [Parish], when we arrived, we were 15th and we ended 10th, so that means £15m more for a player.

“But he also says he doesn’t take the money and buy an island somewhere. He reinvested it into the team.

“Our owners don’t want to take the money. They are so ambitious and just reinvesting. Then it is: ‘Is it worth it, do we get the right replacement?’ This is a lot of consideration.”
