Darwin Nunez wants to leave Al-Hilal, just months after leaving Liverpool

The forward joined Al-Hilal in the summer following Liverpool’s Premier League triumph, in a deal worth £66million

Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is reportedly already seeking an exit route from Saudi Arabia, just months after leaving Anfield.

The forward joined Al-Hilal in the summer following Liverpool’s Premier League triumph, in a deal worth £66million.

According to multiple reports, the 26-year-old is unhappy in the Middle East despite scoring four goals in six games, with Al-Hilal currently sitting four points behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr.

Some social media speculation has suggested Liverpool may be missing the Uruguayan as they try to navigate a difficult spell, with Alexander Isak enduring a tough start to life on Merseyside.

However, Argentinian outlet Olé has claimed that South American giants River Plate have set aside a wage budget for Darwin Nunez as they prepare to move for him ahead of the 2026 season.

Head coach Marcelo Gallardo is planning a major squad rebuild, and he is said to be “keen” on the former Liverpool forward.

The report adds: “Darwin Nunez intends to leave Al-Hilal, but no further advances have been made other than a phone call.”

Despite enjoying a relatively strong start in Saudi Arabia, where he has also registered two assists, Nunez is believed to be searching for his next challenge.

His future has come under scrutiny after a series of social media posts showing him enjoying life following his lucrative move to Saudi Arabia.

Six weeks ago, he shared a carousel of images on Instagram, including an action shot of him celebrating a goal, captioned: “Back at it [blue heart emoji].”

Seven weeks earlier, he posted another set of pictures with the message: “This is just the beginning.”

Nunez’s time at Liverpool was often polarising after his big-money move from Benfica.

The Uruguayan produced several crucial moments for the Reds, especially during their title-winning campaign under Arne Slot, including a decisive brace against Brentford at a key stage of the season.

But alongside those flashes of quality came periods of criticism, as he struggled for consistency and endured extended spells without scoring, even receiving public scrutiny from his manager on one occasion.
