Harry Kane reacts to being dropped by England
The Three Lions captain was unexpectedly benched for the match against Greece
Harry Kane has admitted that he was surprised to be left out of England’s starting lineup for their recent win in Greece.
The Three Lions captain was unexpectedly benched for the match in Athens, where England avenged their earlier defeat at Wembley by overcoming the Greeks.
Despite Kane’s consistent presence in the team over the years, manager Lee Carsley opted to start Ollie Watkins in the attack.
Watkins repaid that decision almost immediately, scoring the opening goal just seven minutes into the match.
Kane, who has maintained prolific form since joining Bayern Munich, stressed that his omission was not related to his performances.
Instead, Carsley’s decision was part of a tactical reshuffle during the final international window of the year.
Reflecting on the moment, Kane admitted that he was initially taken aback when told he would be starting on the bench.
However, he emphasised his determination to support the team and ensure they were well-prepared, embracing his new role with a positive mindset.
He said: “It was probably a little bit of a shock. It was about getting my head around it.
“But I wasn’t down about it. I wasn’t worried about it.
“I understood where Lee was coming from and I think that’s part and parcel of being captain.
“I’ve made it clear that I want to start every game.
“But being a leader, you sometimes have to take things in your stride and say ‘ok, I am ready to help the team.”
Lee Carsley is set to return to his role as the U21s head coach when his interim duties with the senior team conclude.
Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel is expected to start his new role soon, taking over managerial responsibilities.
Ollie Watkins, viewed as Harry Kane’s understudy, was afforded the opportunity to lead the line from the start, showcasing his leadership skills and capabilities in Kane’s absence.
This move highlights the trust placed in Watkins and the anticipation of his potential to step up in crucial moments for the team.
“It was important to give Ollie Watkins an opportunity,” Carsley told ITV on his decision.
“To experience a night like this will be great for himself.
‘This team needs to try and create leaders and one way to do that is give them opportunities.”
