Jamie Carragher reckons Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez will be out of Anfield next year

Nunez, who joined Liverpool for a club-record £63million from Benfica in 2022, has struggled to live up to expectations

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has raised concerns about Darwin Núñez’s future at the club, suggesting the striker may not be at Anfield beyond next season.

Núñez, who joined Liverpool for a club-record £63million from Benfica in 2022, has struggled to live up to expectations.

The Uruguayan has scored just three goals this season, a disappointing return for a player who has made 17 appearances in all competitions.

Despite Liverpool sitting atop the Premier League table, Núñez’s contributions have been underwhelming.

His inconsistency in front of goal and lack of clinical finishing in decisive moments have left fans and pundits frustrated.

The 25-year-old started in Wednesday’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Newcastle, but it marked only his sixth Premier League start of the campaign.

Jamie Carragher, known for his candid analysis, acknowledged the difficulties Núñez is facing, hinting that the striker’s future at the club might be in jeopardy if his performances don’t improve.

He said: “I never know what is going to happen with Nunez when he goes through.

“We said we don’t know what he is going to do so how will the defenders… nobody ever says that about a good player do they?

“He cost £63m with add-ons and there is no way he has got the add-ons.”

Nunez missed a glorious opportunity, scuffing the ball wide against Newcastle, and was also unable to reach Cody Gakpo’s header across the goal.

His transfer fee could rise to as much as £85m, but in a discussion on The Overlap, Ian Wright claimed: “I don’t care – it’s still 85 [million].

“I would’ve thought for that price we would have seen a lot more from him by now.

“It is not going to be any different to what he is now.”
