Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah has been called up to the senior England squad for the upcoming international fixtures in November.
Initially named in the U21 squad, Quansah received the promotion on Wednesday following the withdrawal of Jarrad Branthwaite.
Quansah, who has impressed at Liverpool, will now join Reds teammate Curtis Jones in the senior squad, which will also face the Republic of Ireland at Wembley on Sunday.
Speaking in a press conference to preview their Nations League match against Greece in Athens on Thursday night, Three Lions interim head coach Lee Carsley said: “It’s a great opportunity for Jarell.”
Jarell Quansah’s rise over the past 12 months has been nothing short of meteoric, going from a promising talent to a reliable squad player at Liverpool.
While Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate remain Arne Slot’s first-choice defensive pairing, Quansah has impressed in 37 appearances for the Reds.
The 21-year-old defender now joins the senior England squad after several high-profile withdrawals, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, and Declan Rice, all of whom are sidelined through injury.
Jarell Quansah, along with teammate Curtis Jones, will view this week as a major opportunity to achieve one of the biggest milestones in his career to date: a potential senior England debut.
Having represented the Three Lions 30 times across seven age groups and captaining the Under-21s, Quansah’s selection for the senior squad marks a significant step forward in his international journey.
Whether or not Quansah earns his first cap under manager Lee Carsley remains to be seen, with Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi likely to form the preferred centre-back partnership in the absence of John Stones.
However, even if Quansah doesn’t feature in the upcoming matches against Greece and Ireland, his call-up is an indication that he is climbing the ranks in England’s defensive pecking order.
Looking ahead, Quansah will set his sights on securing a place in the squad for the 2026 World Cup, aiming to impress new England manager Thomas Tuchel.
