Jarell Quansah explains decision to leave Liverpool for Bayer Leverkusen

The 22-year-old was one of the standout departures following the Reds’ Premier League title triumph last season

Former Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah has opened up on his decision to leave Anfield during the summer.

The 22-year-old was one of the standout departures following the Reds’ Premier League title triumph last season, sealing a £35 million move to Bayer Leverkusen.

Quansah admitted that the desire for regular first-team football was the key factor behind his choice to move on.

He started Arne Slot’s opening Premier League game of the 2024/25 season against Ipswich Town but was substituted at half-time and struggled to displace Ibrahima Konate as the campaign progressed.

The young centre-back completed the full 90 minutes in just three of Liverpool’s 38 league matches, with two of those appearances coming after the title had already been secured.

Unable to convince Slot of his long-term role in the side, Quansah recognised that a transfer was necessary to boost his chances of making Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for next summer’s World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

His move to Germany has started positively.

Although he remained an unused substitute against Serbia in September, Quansah has been named in Tuchel’s squad for the upcoming fixtures against Wales and Latvia.

Reflecting on his time at Liverpool, Jarell Quansah expressed his gratitude for the development he received at the club but insisted the timing was right for a new challenge.

“I have been learning from some of the best players around me at the time at Liverpool,” he said.

“Being able to do that has been so good for my career. It has always been a big part of it.

“At this part of my career, 22 turning 23 [in January], I need hundreds of games to be where I want to be.

“I think overall that’s why the decision was made and why I thought going abroad was best for me.”
