Jurgen Klopp reportedly engaged in several discussions about a potential return to management with a major international side.
Klopp, who recently concluded a nearly nine-year tenure as Liverpool manager, is currently on a break from football.
Despite his stated desire for a break, Klopp was approached about a potential role.
According to The Athletic, he was considered as a candidate to succeed Gregg Berhalter as manager of the USA national team.
Other notable figures considered for the role included Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, Brentford manager Thomas Frank, former England manager Gareth Southgate, and ex-Chelsea boss Graham Potter.
Although Jurgen Klopp had initial conversations about the position, he ultimately decided against taking it.
Former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino was eventually appointed.
USA officials reportedly conducted in-depth evaluations of each candidate to assess their playing styles. Pochettino is said to have impressed during a four-hour meeting with the decision-makers.
The USA, which was eliminated in the group stages of the Copa America, is seeking a fresh start as they prepare to host the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico.
In January, Jurgen Klopp announced his decision to take a year off from management after seven and a half years at the helm of Liverpool.
He admitted to “running out of energy” and felt it was essential to take a break.
Despite his intention to rest, Klopp was intrigued by the opportunity with the USA national team as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup.
After Gregg Berhalter was dismissed from his role on July 11, during a period when Klopp was enjoying some downtime with his family in Mallorca, Klopp showed interest in hearing about Crocker’s vision for the team.
Recently, Klopp returned to Borussia Dortmund for a testimonial honoring Lukasz Piszczek and Jakub Blaszczykowski.
Despite these engagements, he has emphasized that he is in no rush to return to management.
Speaking at the end of July, amid speculation about a possible move to the England job, Klopp clarified his current stance.
“At the moment, there is nothing at all in terms of jobs. No club, no country,” he said.
“A few people must not have heard this part.
“And it would be the biggest loss of face in the history of football if you said, ‘I’ll make an exception for you now’.
“I’m going to do some work. I’m too young to only do padel tennis and grandchildren.
“Will that be coaching again? I would actually rule that out at the moment.
“Let’s see what it will look like in a few months. Nothing is coming through at the moment.”
