Leeds United eye January move for Liverpool shot-stopper Caoimhin Kelleher

The 26-year-old has impressed during Alisson Becker's recent injury absence at Liverpool

Leeds United have reportedly set their sights on Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher as they explore alternative options between the posts.

Reports suggest that confidence in current first-choice keeper Illan Meslier has waned within the club, following a series of costly mistakes, including his role in conceding Brad Potts’ opener for Preston North End on Saturday.

The French shot-stopper has faced criticism for several high-profile errors this season, putting his position in jeopardy.

According to Caught Offside, Leeds are actively considering alternatives, with Kelleher emerging as a strong candidate ahead of the January transfer window.

Speaking about Meslier, former Leeds star turned pundit David Norris said: “I think Meslier had started to look okay in recent games, but the people I’ve spoken to who follow Leeds more closely aren’t convinced any longer.

“[Daniel] Farke is likely to be considering other options now.

“He’s been too inconsistent and has cost the club points this season. It just doesn’t look as if they have the confidence in Meslier they once did.”

The 26-year-old Irish goalkeeper has impressed during Alisson Becker’s recent injury absence at Liverpool.

However, with his contract set to expire next summer, Kelleher has been open about his ambition to leave in search of a regular starting role elsewhere.

Speaking on his future in October, Kelleher said: “I was quite clear [last summer] that I wanted to play first-team football, whether that was here or elsewhere. I wanted to be a No 1. That was my thought process – but it’s always been my thought process because obviously I am a football player and, like every player, I want to play. I’m not going to enjoy myself or be happy sitting on the bench.

“When I was coming through the academy to work my way up, obviously when you first get into the No. 2 position you’re happy and it’s progress.

“I think with anything after a while, maybe after doing a few seasons of a similar thing, you want to keep pushing forward and keep going to the next level.

“I’ve played a lot of games now as well and shown my level. The next step for me is to be playing week in, week out and every week.”
