Alexis Mac Allister is set to be part of Liverpool’s pre-season tour to the Far East, despite not having played in a competitive match for over two months.
The 26-year-old midfielder last featured in Liverpool’s 2-2 home draw against Arsenal in mid-May and missed the final two Premier League games of the season as he managed a lingering injury.
Mac Allister was also ruled out of Argentina’s World Cup qualifying matches against Chile and Colombia in June.
Additionally, he was among several senior players who did not participate in Liverpool’s opening pre-season friendly against Preston North End last Sunday.
He remained on the sidelines during Liverpool’s behind-closed-doors warm-up match against Championship side Stoke City at the AXA Training Centre in Kirkby on Sunday afternoon.
So far this pre-season, Mac Allister has been training largely separately from his teammates as he focuses on rehabilitation.
Liverpool fully expect Mac Allister to travel with the squad to Hong Kong later Sunday for the first leg of their summer tour, according to the Liverpool Echo.
The Reds will face AC Milan next Saturday, before heading to Japan to take on Yokohama F Marinos the following Wednesday.
Speaking earlier this summer about his fitness, Mac Allister said, “I’ve had some issues throughout the year.
“It’s not a major injury; it’s a minor one, but it’s better to rest before it gets worse.”
Liverpool’s pre-season schedule will conclude with a double-header at home against Athletic Bilbao on Monday, August 4, followed by the Community Shield clash against Crystal Palace at Wembley the next Sunday.
The Premier League champions will then kick off the new season at home against Bournemouth on Friday, August 15.
