Liverpool hold talks over Jean-Philippe Mateta deal

The Reds are looking to strengthen their attack following the tragic loss of Diogo Jota

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta this summer.

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, the French forward and his agent have recently met with representatives from Liverpool in Paris.

The Reds are looking to strengthen their attack following the tragic loss of Diogo Jota and with Darwin Nunez likely to depart.

Head coach Arne Slot has reportedly identified Mateta as a potential key addition to the squad.

Mateta finished last season with an impressive tally of 17 goals and 4 assists in 46 appearances.

Crystal Palace may be open to negotiations, as Liverpool and several other clubs are reportedly keen on securing his services.

It is believed that a fee around €60million could be enough to complete a deal, although Liverpool may face stiff competition from clubs like Manchester United.

In the 2023/24 season alone, Mateta scored 16 league goals and provided 6 assists in 35 appearances.

His consistent form over the past two seasons suggests he could be a valuable asset for Liverpool’s frontline.

Compared to Nunez, Mateta is viewed as a stronger player and a more clinical finisher.

With the scoring chances Liverpool create regularly, the French striker has the potential to score 20 or more league goals per season, addressing the club’s long-standing need for a reliable number 9.

As Premier League champions, Liverpool will aim to defend their title and mount a stronger challenge in the Champions League next season. To compete on multiple fronts, quality depth in attack will be crucial.

So far this summer, Liverpool have signed Giorgi Mamardashvili, Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, and Freddie Woodman.

However, Slot is expected to pursue one or two more quality additions, with Mateta’s arrival seen as a potentially major boost ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
