Liverpool initiate contact to sign Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes

The 25-year-old was expected to join Atletico following Wolves’ relegation last season, with a £34million (€40m) deal viewed as good value in the current market.

Liverpool have reportedly made contact with Wolves over a potential move for midfielder Joao Gomes after his proposed transfer to Atletico Madrid collapsed.

The 25-year-old was expected to join Atletico following Wolves’ relegation last season, with a £34million (€40m) deal viewed as good value in the current market.

However, the move fell through after a disagreement involving agent Jorge Mendes, with Atletico instead turning their attention to Sporting midfielder Morten Hjulmand.

Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte reports that Liverpool and Manchester United have since contacted Wolves to enquire about the structure and cost of a possible deal.

Liverpool are looking for a defensive midfielder, while United are exploring alternatives after ending their pursuit of Atalanta’s Ederson.

Gomes is a player highly regarded in Brazil and has Premier League experience, making him an attractive option.

ESPN Brasil’s Felipe Silva has also confirmed that Liverpool are monitoring the midfielder.

The Brazilian impressed despite Wolves’ difficult campaign, making 35 league appearances and being voted the club’s Player of the Season by both supporters and teammates.

Known for his energy, aggression and defensive ability, Joao Gomes could suit the demands of new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola.

According to Opta, Gomes ranked among the top midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues for possession wins and defensive actions last season.

However, his game also has limitations, with the midfielder picking up 10 yellow cards and not being recognised as a creative passer capable of unlocking deep defensive blocks.

Gomes joined Wolves from Flamengo in January 2023 and has made 130 appearances for the club, while earning 10 senior caps for Brazil.

With Wolves needing to balance their finances after relegation, Liverpool and Manchester United’s interest could spark a bidding battle for his services.
