Liverpool ramp up interest in Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong

Talks between Liverpool and Frimpong’s camp are said to be ongoing

Liverpool are reportedly intensifying their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong, according to recent reports.

Three key Reds players – Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold – are set to be out of contract next summer.

However, a recent update from The Athletic’s David Ornstein suggests that all three have now been presented with initial contract offers.

While both Salah and Van Dijk have reiterated their intention to stay at Anfield beyond this season, Alexander-Arnold’s future is less certain.

The right-back is reportedly a target for La Liga giants Real Madrid, and if no new deal is agreed, the 26-year-old will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in January.

Amid the uncertainty surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s future, speculation around potential replacements has intensified.

One name that has emerged is Frimpong, with journalist Christian Falk revealing Liverpool’s strong interest in the 24-year-old.

Falk reports that Frimpong’s agent, Dirk Hebel, was invited to Anfield for Liverpool’s Champions League clash against Leverkusen last month, where he reportedly sat in the director’s box.

Talks between Liverpool and Frimpong’s camp are said to be ongoing.

Frimpong, who began his career in England with Manchester City’s academy, never made a first-team appearance before moving to Celtic in 2019.

During his one-and-a-half years in Scotland, he impressed with three goals and eight assists in 51 appearances.

The Dutch international was then signed by Bundesliga side Leverkusen in January 2021, and he played a crucial role in their title-winning campaign under Xabi Alonso last season.

This success has led to growing interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Liverpool.
