Liverpool are continuing their search for a new sporting director to replace Richard Hughes and are seriously considering Julian Ward, according to Sky Sports.
Julian Ward is currently the technical director for Liverpool’s majority owners, FSG, but the club are also exploring the possibility of appointing someone to work alongside him, either as a co-sporting director or technical director.
Hughes, who appointed Andoni Iraola as head coach, stepped down from his role at Anfield earlier this month to join Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal.
Liverpool are considering several candidates, with Brentford technical director Lee Dykes among those understood to be under consideration.
Serious discussions are ongoing at both club and ownership level over who should take on the key role and whether another appointment should be made alongside them.
Liverpool have made significant investments in the transfer market over recent windows, with mixed results.
This season, the club are looking to get the best out of their major 2025 signings, including Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, although the latter is currently injured.
Liverpool also signed seven players ahead of this season, including Bradley Barcola, Victor Munoz, Lucca Brughmans, Djylian N’Guessan, Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona.
Jeremy Jacquet also joined permanently after initially arriving on loan.
