Liverpool sweat on forward fitness after fresh injury blow

Danns captained the under-21 side during their Premier League 2 clash away to Ipswich Town on Saturday afternoon but was forced off

Liverpool are sweating on the fitness of Jayden Danns after the young striker suffered another untimely injury setback.

Danns captained the under-21 side during their Premier League 2 clash away to Ipswich Town on Saturday afternoon but was forced off just over half an hour into the match, which ended in a 3-2 defeat.

The 19-year-old will undergo tests to determine the extent of the injury but has already been ruled out of Liverpool’s Champions League trip to Galatasaray in midweek.

Danns was named on the bench for the 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid in the competition a fortnight ago and featured for the final 15 minutes of last week’s 2-1 League Cup victory over Southampton at Anfield.

The forward had been set to spend the second half of last season on loan at Sunderland but saw his campaign cut short by a back problem, which required additional rehabilitation over the summer.

Rob Page’s side were already trailing to an individual effort from Somto Boniface when Danns was withdrawn and fell 2-0 behind before half-time when Tudor Mendel scored from a corner.

Liverpool mounted a response after the break, with Keyrol Figueroa heading in Kaide Gordon’s corner and Trent Kone-Doherty forcing an own goal from Ipswich defender Leon Elliott.

However, the Tractor Boys had the final say, as Corbin Mthunzi struck the winner six minutes from time.
