Liverpool are optimistic about avoiding a pitch inspection ahead of their Premier League match against Leicester City this evening, despite heavy fog blanketing Merseyside on Boxing Day.
The Reds are set to host struggling Leicester in the day’s evening kick-off as they aim to maintain their position at the top of the Premier League table.
However, thick fog has settled across the region over the past 24 hours, prompting concerns about visibility and potential delays.
Club officials, however, have assured that no inspection has been deemed necessary as of 4:30pm, and preparations for the game continue as scheduled.
The club’s LFC Help account on X stated: “If you are coming to the match today, please ensure you set off earlier than usual due to foggy conditions in and around Anfield stadium.
“Please take care when travelling.”
The Met Office has forecast that the foggy conditions will persist throughout the evening, with their website stating: “Remaining cloudy this evening and overnight with patchy rain and drizzle, especially over higher ground.
“Turning foggy in places with generally murky conditions for many. Staying frost-free with light winds across the region. Minimum temperature 4 °C”
Liverpool have already experienced one postponement this season, with the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park called off in early December due to Storm Darragh.
The Reds face Leicester tonight before travelling to London to take on West Ham United on Sunday.
They will then return to Anfield on January 5 for a clash against Manchester United.
Meanwhile, nearby Tranmere Rovers saw their match against Accrington Stanley at Prenton Park postponed due to the foggy conditions. The game, scheduled for a 3pm kick-off, was officially called off shortly after 2pm.
The League Two club posted on X confirming the news, saying: “We can confirm that the match referee has decided that today’s game has been postponed due to the foggy conditions.
“Tickets will still be valid for the rearranged fixture, which will be arranged in due course.
“Thank you for your patience on this matter and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
