Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola opens up on ‘self harm’ comment

Pep Guardiola is facing mounting pressure at Manchester City, who are now winless in six consecutive matches across all competitions

Pep Guardiola has issued an apology following controversial remarks made after Manchester City’s 3-3 draw with Feyenoord on Tuesday night.

Speaking to the media post-match, Guardiola addressed Man City’s collapse after leading 3-0 in the Champions League clash.

As the press conference concluded, a reporter inquired about a visible scratch on his nose.

Guardiola said: “My finger, here [points to nose]. My nail. I want to harm myself.”

The clip quickly went viral on social media, with some accusing Guardiola of making light of self-harm due to the visible scratch marks on his nose and head.

One user wrote, “Pep should be sanctioned for this comment. Self-harm is not a joke. Disgraceful comment.”

Another added, “Wanting to harm yourself is not something to joke about.”

Guardiola has since issued an apology through a statement posted on social media.

He said: “I was caught off guard with a question at the end of a press conference last night about a scratch which had appeared on my face and explained that a sharp fingernail had accidentally caused this.

Pep Guardiola is facing mounting pressure at Manchester City, who are now winless in six consecutive matches across all competitions.

On Tuesday night, Man City seemed in control at the Etihad Stadium, with Erling Haaland scoring twice and Ilkay Gundogan adding another to establish a 3-0 lead.

However, a late collapse saw them concede three goals in the final 15 minutes, raising further doubts about their ability to contend for silverware this season.

Man City now prepare for a crucial Premier League clash against leaders Liverpool on Sunday. “It’s what it is,” Guardiola said post-match.

“So difficult to swallow right now. The game was good. We scored three, we could have scored more, we do everything but at the end, we give away especially the first one and after we are not stable enough to do it.

“It’s not about not running, no commitment, nothing like that but in football, you have to do it in certain moments. The second goal, the second post, touch the post. Improve, what can you do?

“So rest one or two days and prepare for Anfield.”
