Manchester United reach agreement with Sporting for Ruben Amorim

United have agreed a deal for Amorim

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Sporting Lisbon to secure the services of Ruben Amorim.

On Tuesday, Sporting confirmed that United had expressed interest in triggering Amorim’s €10million (£8.3million) release clause as discussions over a compensation package advanced.

The Manchester Evening News reports that the Red Devils have now agreed to a fee to appoint Amorim, with the club currently negotiating terms to bring his Sporting first-team coaches to Old Trafford.

Carlos Fernandes and Adelio Candido who accompanied Amorim from Braga to Sporting in 2020, have played pivotal roles in his success at the José Alvalade Stadium.

Sporting’s statement read: “Manchester United has expressed an interest in hiring coach Ruben Amorim, with the board of directors of Sporting referring to the terms and conditions set out in the employment contract in force between the company and the coach.

“Specifically the respective termination clause and the amount of €10million.

“Manchester United has expressed an interest in paying Sporting the amount of the aforementioned clause.”

Amorim has previously stated that if he were to become the next Bobby Robson, then Fernandes would be his José Mourinho.

He is poised to become the sixth permanent manager of Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

Erik ten Hag was dismissed after overseeing United’s worst start to a Premier League campaign, and Amorim will be tasked with guiding the team toward the European qualification places.

In his first full season in charge during the 2020/21 campaign, Amorim led Sporting to their first league title in 19 years.

Following that, he finished second and fourth in the league in the subsequent two seasons.

However, he returned to the top in the 2023/24 season, securing another league title for Sporting, this time winning by a margin of 10 points.
