How much Manchester United would have to pay to hire Sporting’s Ruben Amorim
Man United and Sporting are negotiating a compensation package
Sporting boss Ruben Amorim has reportedly agreed in principle to take over as Manchester United’s next manager, succeeding Erik ten Hag on a permanent basis.
Currently, Man United and Sporting are negotiating a compensation package for Amorim, who has been persuaded to join despite interest from Manchester City.
The Man City hierarchy had earmarked Amorim as a prime candidate to replace Pep Guardiola, should he decide to leave the club when his contract expires next summer.
Man City’s incoming sporting director, Hugo Viana, has committed to seeing out the season at Sporting and shares a close professional and personal relationship with Amorim.
However, Man United has been making a strong case to Amorim, arguing that City could become a fading force if Guardiola departs.
Under Guardiola’s leadership since 2016, Man City have won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, the Champions League, and the Club World Cup.
Manchester United’s chief executive, Omar Berrada, who joined from City earlier this year, is collaborating with technical director Jason Wilcox, a former coach and academy director at City.
Berrada has also facilitated the appointment of chief communications officer Toby Craig, whom he worked with at City.
Meanwhile, key City players such as Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan are out of contract next year, while stalwarts like Ederson, Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Bernardo Silva have entered the final two years of their deals.
Amorim, 39, was interviewed by West Ham United earlier this year, but the club opted for former Wolves and Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui instead.
Since taking charge of Sporting in 2020, Amorim has led the club to end a 19-year title drought in 2021.
The compensation fee for Amorim is set at €10million, which is considered acceptable by United’s leadership amid concerns that they might otherwise be restricted to free-agent signings.
