Mark Lawrenson believes Raheem Sterling will be a ’25-minute man’ at Arsenal

Mark Lawrenson has cautioned Raheem Sterling about his potential role at Arsenal this season, suggesting that he may not feature prominently.

Sterling emerged as a surprise target for the Gunners on transfer deadline day after being sidelined by new Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca.

He has since signed on to spend the season at the Emirates.

Sterling will compete with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Leandro Trossard for a wide attacking position and has already featured in matches against both Tottenham and Atalanta since his arrival.

However, Lawrenson believes that Sterling will primarily serve as a backup player for Mikel Arteta moving forward, rather than a regular starter.

Speaking to Paddy Power, the former Match of the Day pundit said: “At Arsenal, I think Raheem Sterling will solely be used for squad depth, I don’t see him breaking into the starting team.

“I’d imagine that the manager will have already told him that he’ll be a 25-minute man each week and that will be it, unless he does well when he gets a chance.

“I’ve been quite impressed with Arsenal in recent years and they know that the game against Manchester City this weekend is a massive game for them and I have a feeling that they will go to the Etihad and take home all three points.”

As Arsenal pursue their first domestic title in over 20 years, Raheem Sterling’s extensive experience is seen as a significant asset for a team that came heartbreakingly close to claiming the Premier League crown from Manchester City last season.

Sterling, who won four titles during his tenure at the Etihad, has faced some skepticism regarding his signing.

However, Mikel Arteta, who closely worked with Sterling during his time on the City coaching staff, expressed complete confidence in bringing the player to Arsenal.

“After 10 seconds I knew we had to bring him (to Arsenal) because he really wanted it, and that was my only question mark, what stage is he at in his career? But after 10 seconds I knew,” Arteta said.

“He looks great. He has got a big smile on his face, a lot of energy and he wants to prove a point.

“When someone has got that in their belly you sense it straight away.

“I don’t need to discuss his quality and what he can bring to the team.”
