Mohamed Salah to miss rest of season due to hamstring injury

Salah, who has scored 257 goals in 440 appearances during nine trophy-laden years at Anfield, confirmed last month he will leave the club this summer

Mohamed Salah faces a race against time to play again for Liverpool after suffering a hamstring injury in Saturday’s 3-1 Premier League win over Crystal Palace.

The 33-year-old was forced off before the hour mark, raising doubts over whether he will feature again before his departure at the end of the season.

Mohamed Salah, who has scored 257 goals in 440 appearances during nine trophy-laden years at Anfield, confirmed last month he will leave the club this summer.

Head coach Arne Slot admitted after the win that “we simply don’t know” if Salah will return this season, while Egypt national team director Ibrahim Hassan has indicated the recovery timeline remains uncertain.

Hassan told Okaz in an exclusive statement: “Mohamed Salah is suffering from a muscle tear and will be out of action for four weeks.”

Asked if he will be fit to face Brentford on the final day of the Premier League season, Ibrahim Hassan said: “It is not possible to determine that at the moment.”

“It depends on how well he recovers from the injury and his readiness.”

The report adds that Egypt’s national team “quickly contacted Liverpool to check on Salah’s condition” with the World Cup less than 50 days away.

The forward, who will captain his country in North America this summer, went straight down the tunnel for treatment after being substituted and is set to undergo scans to determine the extent of the injury.

Reds boss Slot said on Salah: “We don’t know, that’s the best answer I can give because if I say it might be a chance then probably all the headlines are, ‘there might be a chance…’

“We simply don’t know but what we do know is the season is in four weeks over, so there are not a lot of games being played.

“We have to wait and see how his injury is and if he is able to return to play.

“What I do know about Mo is throughout all of these years he has taken such good care of his body that he will have the minimum time required to recover from an injury.

“Let’s hope for the best and that he is available in the last part [of the season].”
