Paris Saint-Germain’s Luis Campos among contenders to replace Edu at Arsenal

Several potential successors have been named, including former Arsenal players Per Mertesacker and Tomas Rosicky

Paris Saint-Germain’s Luis Campos is reportedly among the candidates to replace Edu at Arsenal.

Technical director Edu departed Arsenal after a five-year tenure and is expected to join Nottingham Forest, linking up with owner Evangelos Marinakis.

The Brazilian, who also had a playing stint at Arsenal, is believed to have turned down a last-minute offer to remain in North London.

Several potential successors have been named, including former Arsenal players Per Mertesacker and Tomas Rosicky.

Additionally, Gilberto Silva, a member of Arsenal’s Invincibles, has been approached regarding the role, having previously held a similar position at Panathinaikos.

Campos is the latest figure linked to the vacancy.

The Portuguese executive is contracted to PSG until the end of the current season, potentially making him available for a new opportunity.

According to Sky Sports, senior Arsenal officials convened in Los Angeles during the international break to discuss future plans.

Manager Mikel Arteta reportedly traveled to meet with owners Stan and Josh Kroenke, as well as directors Tim Lewis, Richard Garlick, and assistant sporting director Jason Ayto.

The report notes that the meeting had been planned prior to Edu’s departure, but potential replacements were discussed. Campos is not the only name on the shortlist.

West Ham are reportedly wary of Arsenal’s interest in their transfer specialist Tim Steidten, while Real Sociedad’s Roberto Olabe, who is set to leave the Spanish club in the summer, is another candidate.

Simon Rolfes has also been mentioned, with his successful track record at Bayer Leverkusen, where he finished his playing career, adding to his appeal.

Luis Campos joined PSG in 2022, succeeding Leonardo. He reunited with Kylian Mbappe, having previously worked with the star during Monaco’s 2016-17 title-winning campaign.

Over his tenure at PSG, Campos has shifted the club’s transfer strategy, moving away from signing high-profile, aging stars.

The exits of Lionel Messi and Neymar in 2023 signaled a shift towards younger talent.

In the summer of 2023, PSG brought in several French players, including Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembele, and Randal Kolo Muani, followed by the arrival of Desire Doue in the most recent transfer window.

PSG, aiming for their fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title, currently hold a six-point lead over their nearest rivals, Monaco.
