Pep Guardiola has admitted that Manchester City’s chances of retaining the Premier League title could be over if they lose at Anfield next week.
The reigning champions, aiming for a historic fourth consecutive title, have now suffered five consecutive defeats in all competitions.
If Liverpool extend their lead at the top to eight points with a win at Southampton, Guardiola’s men will face immense pressure heading to Merseyside.
Man City’s record at Anfield offers little comfort, with just three wins in the last 43 years.
Speaking ahead of the crucial clash, Pep Guardiola acknowledged the stakes, saying a defeat could be decisive in the title race.
“Yes. In terms of Liverpool winning, winning, winning it’s true. I don’t know what is going to happen, but the reality is here and we have to win games,” he said.
“People are saying it can’t get worse – but it can get worse.
“The exceptional things we have done over the last eight years are not eternal.
“I said how difficult it was to do the things we have done – and now people might believe me.
“We are a bit fragile right now, but we can’t run away.
“We have to face it. I would like to say there is just one reason for losing three Premier League games in a row.
“There are many details that we have to fix.”
