Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is working diligently to maintain Erling Haaland’s positivity as opponents continue to implement strategies to mark him out of games.
Haaland broke a three-match scoring drought in spectacular fashion against Sparta Prague, netting a stunning backheel volley in the second half, followed by another goal just ten minutes later.
This performance helped him maintain an impressive scoring rate of over a goal per game in the Champions League.
His acrobatic effort serves as a reminder of his potential to win the Ballon d’Or in the future, though it’s unlikely he will secure this year’s award when the winners are announced on Monday.
While Guardiola remains indifferent to individual accolades, he has spoken with Haaland to encourage him to stay patient, especially after a series of matches where his opportunities have been severely restricted by opposing defences.
The two goals against Sparta Prague will certainly boost Haaland’s confidence as he prepares for the upcoming Premier League match against struggling Southampton.
“Maybe the players are concerned about it but I don’t care one second about the Ballon d’Or,” said Pep Guardiola.
“What is important is he’s happy and smiling.
“I know it’s not easy for him, they defend in the box with three central defenders, two holding midfielders close to him and even the wingers close to the holding midfielders.
“There is literally no space, every cross they are hugging him.
“We spoke many times with him and said be patient and positive because the ball will arrive.
“He scored two goals, he had two really good headers.
“Erling has this incredible capacity: he can touch 15, 20 balls but have seven, eight chances.
“It’s unbelievable the talent that he has. He made a fantastic goal, similar to Dortmund a few years ago with the assist from Joao Cancelo.
“I don’t know which one is more difficult but I would say both.”
