Ruben Amorim opens door for Harry Maguire to regain captaincy of Manchester United
Maguire was one of the few positives in a disappointing performance at Molineux, where the club’s issues were laid bare
Ruben Amorim has given Harry Maguire the opportunity to regain the captaincy of Manchester United – at least for one game.
With Bruno Fernandes set to miss Monday night’s match against Newcastle United at Old Trafford due to suspension, the 31-year-old centre-back could have the chance to continue his personal rehabilitation.
New manager Amorim has limited options for the armband in the absence of the Portuguese playmaker.
Maguire was one of the few positives in a disappointing performance at Molineux, where the club’s issues were laid bare.
The defender stood out for his determination and effort amid an otherwise mediocre team display.
When asked about replacing Fernandes as captain, Manchester United’s manager said: You will have to wait and see about the captain.”
Asked to further expand on the Maguire’s influence since he arrived at the club, Amorim said: “He’s working really well. He’s focused on the job, not what people say.
“He has no excuses – even if he’s had some tough moments. In that respect, he’s an example. He’s there to play to help the team and he’s trying to do that.”
Harry Maguire has experienced a rollercoaster of emotions since his £80m move to Manchester United five years ago.
Arriving as the world’s most expensive defender, Maguire quickly earned the praise of then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who made him captain just six months after his arrival from Leicester City.
However, under Erik ten Hag, Maguire lost the armband due to injury and a subsequent dip in form. This period coincided with a loss of confidence, both for United and the England international, who became the target of intense criticism from fans.
Despite these struggles, Maguire led the Red Devils to an impressive 81 wins out of 140 matches in which he wore the captain’s armband.
A similar return would be a welcome boost for Amorim, who is still searching for a winning formula that has so far eluded him.
