Tottenham are preparing to activate a one-year extension on Son Heung-min’s contract, securing the forward’s future at the club beyond this season, according to The Telegraph.
Son signed his latest deal in 2021, which is set to expire in seven months. It is understood that the club holds the option to extend his contract for an additional year.
Spurs only need to formally inform Son of this decision, which they fully intend to do so.
Throughout his tenure at Tottenham, Son has reached the finals of both the Champions League and the EFL Cup, but he has yet to secure a major trophy with the club.
If the extension is triggered, he will enter his second decade at Spurs after joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 for a fee of £22million, a move that is regarded as one of the club’s finest achievements in modern transfer history.
Ange Postecoglou appointed the 32-year-old as captain following Hugo Lloris’ departure, recognizing Son’s pivotal role in helping the club become a regular presence in the Champions League over his nine-and-a-half years at Tottenham.
The forward has consistently found the back of the net, achieving double figures for goals in all but his first season at the club.
With 123 goals in the Premier League, he currently ranks as the joint-third highest scorer among active players in the competition, trailing only Mohamed Salah (164) and Jamie Vardy (140).
Earlier this season, Son was asked about his contract situation and emphasized his focus on ending Spurs’ trophy drought, which has persisted since 2008. He remains committed to bringing silverware to the club.
“I am fully focused on this year and just want to win something that everybody at the club – the players, all around – deserves,” he said. “That’s what I’m working for.
“In the future you never know what will happen, but I will give everything for this club because it’s been almost 10 years and I give everything.
“I still have a contract with the club which is the very important thing and I just want to give everything until my contract [expires].”
