Liverpool have made a contract offer to Virgil van Dijk in an effort to resolve the uncertainty surrounding his future and secure the Netherlands defender to a new agreement, according to The Athletic.
Van Dijk is one of three key players alongside Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold – whose current contracts are set to expire next summer.
Their futures have been the subject of much speculation, and Salah, 32, recently confirmed that he has not yet received any proposals to extend his Anfield stay.
This remains true as of Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City, though it is expected that discussions will soon progress.
In contrast, negotiations with Van Dijk have seen Liverpool present an initial offer to extend the 33-year-old’s contract.
However, the bid fell short of his expectations, and so far, no agreement has been reached regarding the terms or length of an extension.
The talks have been ongoing for some time and continue, with all three players playing vital roles in Liverpool’s strong start to the season under head coach Arne Slot.
Their excellent performances suggest that the contract discussions are not negatively affecting their on-field contributions.
Van Dijk’s importance was highlighted on Monday when he was nominated for the FIFPRO Men’s World XI.
Conversations are also continuing between Liverpool and Alexander-Arnold.
At 26 years old and as an academy graduate, his situation differs from his teammates, but like Van Dijk and Salah, it remains unclear how these talks will unfold.
Alexander-Arnold has attracted significant interest from Real Madrid, but, as with the other two, the resolution of his future remains uncertain.
Van Dijk’s form has reached new heights this season, with the centre-back leading by example in the heart of Liverpool’s defence.
He is one of only three players, along with Salah and Ryan Gravenberch, to have started every Premier League and Champions League match. Van Dijk’s presence is pivotal to the team’s defensive stability.
After a hectic summer in which he played every minute for the Netherlands during their run to the semi-finals of Euro 2024, Virgil van Dijk had just nine days of training under new head coach Arne Slot before the season began.
Despite this short preparation, he quickly adapted to Slot’s tactical approach.
The centre-back now has added responsibility to build Liverpool’s attacks from the back, a challenge he has embraced.
With 957 successful passes, he leads all Premier League players by a considerable margin and ranks third among centre-backs for passes into the final third.
Van Dijk’s leadership on and off the pitch is another key aspect of his contribution.
Slot has praised his captain for his commanding presence, even admitting surprise at how influential Van Dijk is on a daily basis.
However, it is his defensive solidity that remains his standout attribute.
Van Dijk reads the game exceptionally well, covers his teammates effectively, and is the primary reason Liverpool have conceded just nine goals in their 18 Premier League and Champions League matches, the fewest in both competitions.
