Mohamed Salah says he feels he has been “thrown under the bus” by Liverpool, revealing that his relationship with head coach Arne Slot has broken down.
Salah was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Leeds United, the third consecutive match in which the Egypt forward has started on the bench.
After the game, the 33-year-old, who has scored 250 goals in 420 appearances for Liverpool, gave an extraordinary interview to journalists.
Salah said: “I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame.
“I said many times before that I had a good relationship with the manager, and all of a sudden we don’t have any relationship.
“I don’t know why but it seems to me, how I see it, that someone doesn’t want me in the club.
“It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. That is how I am feeling. I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame.
“This club, I will always support it. My kids will always support it. I love the club so much and I always will.
“It [the situation] is not acceptable to me, to be fair. I don’t get it. It’s like I’m being thrown more under the bus. I don’t think I’m the problem. I have done so much for this club.
“I don’t have to go every day fighting for my position because I earned it. I am not bigger than anyone but I earned my position. It’s football. It is what it is.”
Salah, who is due to join up with Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations on 15 December, admitted he is uncertain about his future at Anfield despite signing a new two-year contract in April.
Salah scored 29 Premier League goals in the 2024–25 campaign as Liverpool won the title in Slot’s first season, but he has struggled to replicate that form this term.
He has managed just four goals in 13 league appearances, as Liverpool have fallen short of last season’s standards.
Signed from Roma in 2017 by Jurgen Klopp, Salah has become one of the club’s greatest goalscorers, but speculation over his future has grown.
The Saudi Pro League has long viewed Salah, arguably the most recognisable Middle Eastern footballer in the world, as a marquee target, joining a roster of global stars that already includes Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mané.
Al-Hilal, coached by Simone Inzaghi, are among the clubs interested in the Egyptian.
According to BBC Sport, Liverpool are open-minded about Salah’s future amid increasing interest from Saudi Arabia.
