Why Dominik Szoboszlai issued apology to Liverpool fans

The midfielder drew criticism after gesturing toward travelling fans during the 4-0 loss at the Etihad, a result that intensified frustration among supporters

Dominik Szoboszlai has apologised for a “misunderstanding” with Liverpool supporters following their FA Cup defeat at Manchester City, and believes the Anfield crowd can inspire a comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League.

The midfielder drew criticism after gesturing toward travelling fans during the 4-0 loss at the Etihad, a result that intensified frustration among supporters.

The reaction worsened after Liverpool’s 2-0 first-leg defeat in Paris days later.

Szoboszlai has now addressed the situation, aiming to rebuild unity between the squad and fans amid ongoing discontent, including concerns over planned ticket price increases.

“Yeah, to make it clear, maybe it was a misunderstanding between me and the fans,” said the Hungary international. “I didn’t mean it in a bad way. Obviously, I know what the fans mean for this club and what this club means for the fans as well.

“As a player, we know we do everything for them as well as we do for us. So if it was a misunderstanding, then I apologise, but they can feel also that I’m not feeling better than them. I’m feeling exactly the same way as they do.

“And to make it clear that I’m with them, and we are with them. And I think hopefully they are with us as well.”

Liverpool are aiming to produce one of the greatest comebacks in their history when they host holders Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday in the return leg.

The Reds have only twice overturned a first-leg deficit of two goals or more in Europe – against AJ Auxerre in the UEFA Cup in 1991, and famously against FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League in 2019.

Szoboszlai said: “That we’re gonna go all in, we’re gonna give our best from the minute one until the minute hopefully 90 because it can be enough, but maybe if it goes even more 120, 125.

“I think I can speak for all of the players, we want it so bad, we work for it so bad and in one game everything can happen at Anfield.

“Anfield is going to make a big impact, we saw it many times in this season, last season so it is going to be not only 11 players or the subs, it is going to be the whole stadium and we know how it feels to be playing for Liverpool in front of these fans. We don’t need any more motivation.”

Szoboszlai added: “Personally I believe completely because I know what we are able to do, what kind of players we have, what kind of mentality we have and we showed it many times, maybe not every game, and that is what we need again tomorrow

“Now we can talk about tactics but I am not going to open it up publicly. It is going to be a different game, we are going to do different stuff. We saw what they did in the first game and will try to manage it in a different fashion.

“But we need to go all in and if at the end you say we gave everything and we didn’t go through, you can still put your chin up and say we tried it. But I surely believe there is a big opportunity tomorrow.”
