Why Enzo Maresca has left his role as Chelsea manager

The Italian, 45, departs with the Blues fifth in the Premier League

Chelsea have parted ways with manager Enzo Maresca just under six months after he led the club to a Club World Cup triumph.

The Italian, 45, departs with the Blues fifth in the Premier League, having won only one of their last seven league games and collected six points from six December matches, leaving them 15 points behind leaders Arsenal.

A club statement read: “Chelsea Football Club and Head Coach Enzo Maresca have parted company.

“During his time at the Club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the Club.

“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the Club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.

“We wish Enzo well for the future.”

Enzo Maresca, who had a contract running until 2029, earned plaudits for last season’s successes, including a top-four finish, the Conference League, and the Club World Cup.

However, tensions with the club hierarchy grew over the months, highlighted by public comments he made following a 2-0 win over Everton, disagreements over transfer decisions, and outside commitments without club approval.

Reports also noted friction over his agent change, attire choices, and media duties.

Chelsea initially intended to review his position at the end of the season, but both parties agreed an early departure was best.

Reacting to the news, Chelsea full-back Marc Cucurella wrote on Instagram: “Thank you for everything, mister, and to your staff… Wishing you all the best in what comes next. Good luck, boss!”
