Why Jose Mourinho was shown red card against Manchester United

Jose Mourinho was sent off after his furious reaction to controversial Man Utd decision

Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho was shown a red card during his side’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United in the Europa League, following a heated exchange with the officials.

The controversy erupted when referee Clément Turpin waved away Fenerbahce’s appeals for a penalty after Bright Osayi-Samuel, formerly of Blackpool and QPR, went down in the box following a challenge from Manuel Ugarte.

Mourinho, visibly incensed by the decision, confronted fourth official Jérémie Stinat in a heated manner.

Turpin intervened and showed the Portuguese tactician a red card for foul and abusive language, leaving Mourinho to watch the remainder of the match from the stands.

The match ended level, with goals from Christian Eriksen and Youssef En-Nesyri. Eriksen opened the scoring for United, finishing off a well-worked move in the first half.

However, Fenerbahce equalised in the second half when En-Nesyri powered in a header to level the score.

After the game, Mourinho said: “He told me something incredible. He told me at the same time he could see the action in the box and my behaviour on the touchline.

“I congratulate him because he is absolutely incredible, his peripheral vision.

“During the game, 100mph, he had one eye on the penalty situation and he had one eye on the bench and my behaviour.

“That’s the explanation he gave me.

“That’s why he’s one of the best referees in the world.”

Ahead of the match, Jose Mourinho, who previously won both the Europa League and the League Cup during his tenure at Manchester United, had warned his former club that Fenerbahce would be a formidable challenge – a prediction that proved true in the tightly contested draw.

“I think there is no connection with the past,” he said.

“When I have played Manchester United I played with big teams. Porto a few months later became European Champions, Real Madrid was Real Madrid, Chelsea was Chelsea.

“We are going to try, and we can do it, but there is a gap.

“Our work is to try to close that gap and to go for it, and we are going for it.

“Of course, tomorrow I want to win, that is the basic of football, but I wish [United] the best.

“They have a better team than the results are showing.

“They will succeed sooner or later, hopefully.

“Today they are my opponents for one match, and of course tomorrow the feelings during the 90 minutes there are no feelings.

“If they come thinking it is going to be easy, I think is the wrong approach.

“Unfortunately for us, I don’t think that will be the approach.

“They know it will be difficult for them, they will come with maximum strength, I don’t think they are going to make rotations.

“That is what I would do.”
