Why Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio rejected Liverpool last summer

The Italian shot-stopper, who gained prominence at Monza, opted to join Juventus after being named the Best Serie A Goalkeeper for the 2023-24 season

Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio is said to have turned down a summer transfer to Liverpool in favour of signing for the Turin club from Monza.

The Italian shot-stopper, who gained prominence at Monza, opted to join Juventus after being named the Best Serie A Goalkeeper for the 2023-24 season.

Michele Di Gregorio penned a long-term contract with Juventus, keeping him at the club until 2028, after the Bianconeri paid €14million (£12million) for his services.

However, the 27-year-old had the opportunity to leave Italy and move to England, as Liverpool were reportedly among the clubs interested in acquiring him.

Di Gregorio’s agent, Matteo Belloni, revealed more about the summer transfer saga, confirming that Liverpool made a lucrative offer to the goalkeeper before ultimately securing a pre-contract agreement with Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili.

“We said no to Liverpool in the summer to join the Juventus project,” Belloni told Tuttosport.

“He’s working hard to improve continuously.

“He set up a gym at home so he could train on his days off.

“He has an incredible mentality, and his desire is to be part of a Juventus side that rewrites history and wins important trophies.”

Di Gregorio’s contributions have already proven vital, highlighted by his stellar performance in Juventus’ 2-0 victory over Manchester City in a recent Champions League clash.

He showcased his exceptional shot-stopping abilities, denying both Erling Haaland and Ilkay Gundogan with spectacular saves, further adding to the misery for Pep Guardiola’s side

“Surely, Manchester City fans will remember his saves for a long time,” the goalkeeper’s agent added.
