Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has withdrawn from consideration to return as Rangers manager following the dismissal of Russell Martin.
The 45-year-old had been viewed as the frontrunner to take charge of the Scottish giants once again.
Martin was sacked earlier this week after a disappointing start to the season.
Gerrard, in contrast, enjoyed remarkable success during his previous spell at Ibrox, ending the club’s decade-long wait for a Scottish Premiership title.
However, Sky Sports now report that Gerrard has removed himself from the process to succeed Martin.
It’s understood that both parties held positive discussions about the role, but the former Rangers boss ultimately felt the timing wasn’t right for a return.
Despite that, Gerrard is believed to have left the door open for a possible reunion in the future. He famously guided Rangers to the 2020/21 Premiership crown, completing an unbeaten league campaign that season.
Earlier this week, Gerrard admitted he felt there was still “unfinished business” in his managerial career.
“There’s a part of me that still feels that there’s a bit of unfinished business in terms of wanting to go in and face another couple of exciting challenges,” he said on the ‘Rio Meets’ podcast.
“But I want a certain type of challenge. If in an ideal world they come available, I’ll jump at them.”
As Rangers turn their attention elsewhere, former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is understood to have made a strong impression on the club’s hierarchy during the selection process.
Röhl, who has been out of work since leaving the Championship side in July, was reportedly approached by Rangers in the summer prior to Russell Martin’s appointment.
