Wolves star Matheus Cunha handed two match ban and £80k fine
The incident occurred after Ipswich snatched a dramatic last-minute 2-1 victory at Molineux, sparking a tense confrontation
Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha has been slapped with a two-match suspension and an £80,000 fine following a heated altercation with a member of Ipswich Town’s coaching staff.
The incident occurred after Ipswich snatched a dramatic last-minute 2-1 victory at Molineux, sparking a tense confrontation.
Cunha, visibly frustrated, appeared to strike an Ipswich staff member during the post-match chaos.
Tensions were already high following the dismissal of his teammate Rayan Aït-Nouri, with emotions boiling over on both sides.
Photographs from the aftermath also showed Cunha snatching a pair of glasses from the Ipswich staff member’s face.
The 25-year-old has been instrumental for Wolves this season, netting 10 goals in 20 appearances.
However, his suspension will now see him miss two crucial matches, dealing a blow to Julen Lopetegui’s side.
The FA confirmed the punishment on Monday, emphasising their commitment to maintaining discipline and respect within the game.
Cunha’s absence will force Wolves to reshuffle their attacking lineup as they look to maintain momentum in his absence.
In a statement, the FA said: “Matheus Cunha has been suspended for two games and fined £80,000 following the Premier League fixture between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town on Saturday 14 December 2024.
“The forward was charged with misconduct and it was alleged that he acted in an improper manner after the final whistle. He admitted the charge and the sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission. Full written reasons for this case will be published in due course.”
Cunha will now miss Forest’s visit to Wolves on Monday, as well as the club’s FA Cup tie against Bristol City.
