Xabi Alonso’s ‘future lies at Anfield’

Alonso reportedly retains strong backing across Europe despite his recent spell at Real Madrid, where he recorded 24 wins, six defeats and four draws.

Xabi Alonso continues to be linked with Liverpool amid uncertainty surrounding Arne Slot, with reports in Spain suggesting the former Red could return to Anfield.

According to Diario AS editor-in-chief Aritz Gabilondo, there are “no doubts” Alonso’s future “lies at Anfield,” with Liverpool said to be pushing hardest for his appointment.

The 44-year-old reportedly retains strong backing across Europe despite his recent spell at Real Madrid, where he recorded 24 wins, six defeats and four draws.

His successor, Alvaro Arbeloa, has struggled to match expectations, with his side trailing Barcelona in La Liga and exiting the Copa del Rey early.

The report describes Liverpool’s opportunity as “golden,” particularly with Enzo Maresca tipped as Pep Guardiola’s successor at Manchester City and Vincent Kompany impressing at Bayern Munich.

German reports also claim Alonso is “ready” to take over at Liverpool if approached. However, a decision hinges on the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, and Slot’s future.

UK reports suggest patience, with the belief he deserves time, while sources in Germany expect a managerial change, naming Alonso as the top candidate.

Liverpool’s focus remains on securing UEFA Champions League qualification, including overturning a 2-0 deficit against Paris Saint-Germain, with a full review expected at season’s end.
