AC Milan sack head coach Paulo Fonseca after just six months in charge

The decision comes after a frustrating 1-1 draw against Roma on Sunday, a result that left the Rossoneri sitting eighth in Serie A

AC Milan have parted ways with head coach Paulo Fonseca after just six months in charge, with reports suggesting his replacement has already been identified.

The decision comes after a frustrating 1-1 draw against Roma on Sunday, a result that left the Rossoneri sitting eighth in Serie A.

Despite initially claiming he had “no signal” that he would lose his job, Fonseca later confirmed his departure to reporters while leaving the San Siro.

Milan have since made the news official, announcing that the Portuguese coach will no longer lead the team.

His tenure saw mixed results, with Milan performing well in the Champions League – currently 12th out of 36 teams in the competition – but struggling domestically.

They are 14 points adrift of Serie A leaders Atalanta, a gap that has proven too wide for the club’s hierarchy to overlook.

Reports in Italy suggest that former Porto manager Sergio Conceição is the frontrunner to replace Fonseca.

Conceição, who previously played for Inter Milan during his career, is expected to take over imminently.

However, it remains unclear whether he will be in the dugout for Milan’s Supercoppa Italiana semi-final against Juventus on January 3.

Christian Pulisic and his teammates now await confirmation of their new manager, as Milan look to revive their domestic campaign and build on their European form under new leadership.

The statement reads: “AC Milan announces that Paulo Fonseca has been relieved from his duties as Head Coach of the Men’s First Team.
