A reliable Merseyside reporter has cast “doubt” over Alexis Mac Allister’s future, with no contract talks currently underway.
The midfielder has struggled for form this season, showing reduced energy, attacking output, and quality on the ball. At 27, he should be in his prime, but his performances have dipped significantly.
According to Paul Joyce of The Times, there is uncertainty surrounding Mac Allister’s future, though his deal runs until 2028.
In contrast, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai have both held contract discussions, with Gravenberch recently signing a new long-term deal.
Szoboszlai has admitted talks over his own future have stalled, despite his desire to stay.
He added: “I see myself here in the long term, but as I say, it is not really in my hands any more. I love being here, as I said many times. I’m completely relaxed.”
Mac Allister has previously said he is not in a rush to negotiate. In March, the Argentine said: “We are not in contract talks, but I’m not in a rush.”
He has spoken about a long-term ambition to return to Argentina, potentially with Argentinos Juniors or Boca Juniors. He has also expressed interest in playing in Spain.
“I’d love to return to Argentinos Juniors because my dad and my brothers all grew up there and we’re grateful,” he said.
“And then, obviously, to Boca at some point.”
Mac Allister added: “It’s a country I like a lot and I’ve visited it several times, and, above all, because of the language and the culture. It’s very similar to Argentina.”
